Adult Programs

Nereid’s adult programs are designed to progress a beginner rower to Novice programs, membership and participation in the club throughout 2010. There are two ways to start.

1.  The Adult Learn to Row program is a great introduction to rowing for beginners. The program costs $300 for 10 one-hour sessions.  There is a maximum of 4 rowers per program. The coach will determine when the boat is ready to go on the water, but the first session or two are usually spent on land reviewing equipment and practicing technique.  The dates for the programs are:

Adult Learn to Row 1 - 5/25 through 6/15 Tue, Thur and Sat 6:45-8PM
Adult Learn to Row 2 - 6/18 through 7/10 Mon, Wed and Fri 6:45-8PM.  Last session on Sat 7/10 6:45-8PM (no sessions on 7/3)

2. Nereid also offers a beginner’s program that starts with 5 one-hour private lessons at a cost of $200.  This allows for flexibility for those who cannot attend the group Learn to Row sessions.  It also provides the ability to start earlier or later in the rowing season.   These individual Learn to Row sessions will be arranged with the coaches and can start whenever safe water conditions allow.  This is likely to be from early April through early November.

Upon completion of the session, a participant will have the following options.
a.  Join the club (Look at Nereid’s membership page)
b.  Sign up for an Adult Novice class when available (see below)
c.  Take up to 5 additional private lessons at $50 per one-hour session.

Upon completion of all private lessons a participant must join the club before taking additional private lessons or participating in an Adult Novice class.

The coaches will work with participants to determine the best next steps level given the progression made.

3. The Adult Novice program is for those beginners or club members who are ready to start rowing with others of comparable ability.  Each program will cost $300 for 10 sessions.  There is a maximum of 4 rowers per program. The dates for the Adult Novice programs are:

Adult Novice 1 - 6/21 through 7/14 Mon, Wed and Fri 5:30-6:45PM (no session on 7/5)
Adult Novice 2 - 7/19 through 8/9 Mon, Wed and Fri 6:45-8PM

If you want to participate in an Adult Novice session but cannot make the scheduled dates and times, contact our coaches or David Dowd, VP Rowing Programs programs@nereidbc.org.  We will try to organize a session with others who also may be interested.

4. The Adult Technique program is for club members who want to continue to improve their skills.  The program will cost $320 for 8 sessions.  There is a maximum of 4 rowers per program.  The dates for the Adult Technique Improvement programs are:

Adult Technique Improvement 1 - 5/31 through 6/16 Mon, Wed and Fri 6:45-8PM

Junior Programs

1. Junior Spring Competitive Program

A.  Coaching
Oksana Tsimbalova and Sarah Kornblum will coach the Junior Spring Program, working under the direction of Nereid’s coach, Boris Roque.

B.  Program Description

The Junior Spring program is intended for those whose High Schools do not have Rowing teams. The program is designed for 16 rowers.  If more participants sign up for the program, Nereid will try to accommodate the additional numbers but cannot guarantee participation.  Preference will be given first to those in High School and then to those in 8th Grade.

The rowers will be split into groups, with each group participating in 1 to 2 hour sessions.   Participants with no rowing experience are welcome to attend, but need to understand that there will be no refund if the participant decides to drop out of the program.  Nereid offers other Learn to Row programs that may be more appropriate for a participant who is not committed to complete the program. The coaches will decide in which group the participants will belong.  This may change during the season.  The focus of the program is to develop technical skills, fitness and prepare athletes for races if capable.

C. Fee
The program will cost $500. (Complete the Junior Sign-up form and submit)

D. Schedule
3/1 through 5/29 Mon, Wed, Fri and Sat; 4-6PM

The time is currently tentative. Once the team is final, the coaches will work with the athletes to finalize a schedule that works for all. This will factor in Daylight and the athletes ability.

There will only be land practice for the first few weeks of the program (3/1 though 3/15). Water practice will start as soon as possible after 3/15, but will be dependent on temperature, weather, water conditions and daylight. Land practice will occur if the coaches decide conditions are not appropriate for water practice.

The coaches will determine when participants are ready to participate in competition.  The coaches will also determine if any rowers are able to participate in more competitive regattas requiring travel.  For those eligible, we plan to attend regattas on 4/16 at Mercer Lake and 4/25 in Camden.
