Adult Programs
Nereid’s
adult programs are designed to progress a beginner rower to Novice programs, membership and participation in the club throughout 2012. There are two ways to start.
1. The Adult Learn to Row program is a great introduction to rowing for beginners. The program costs $300 for 10 one-hour sessions. There is a maximum of 4 rowers per program. The coach will determine when the boat is ready to go on the water, but the first session or two are usually spent on land reviewing equipment and practicing technique. The dates for the programs are:
Adult Learn to Row 1 - 5/29 through 6/19 Tue, Thur and Sat 6:45-8PM
Adult Learn to Row 2 - 6/11 through 7/3 Mon, Wed and Fri 6:45-8PM.
2. For those who cannot make our group programs, Nereid also offers a beginner’s program. This program starts with 5 one-hour private lessons at a cost of $200. This allows for flexibility for those who cannot attend the group Learn to Row sessions. This provides you with the ability to have a Learn to Row Program that is flexible in dates, times and time of year. We will put you in touch with one of our coaches to arrange convenient dates and times. You may start whenever safe water conditions allow. This is likely to be from early April through early November.
Upon completion of the session, a participant will have the following options.
a. Join the club (Look at Nereid’s membership page)
b. Sign up for an Adult Novice class when available (see below)
c. Take up to 5 additional private lessons at $50 per one-hour
session.
Upon completion of all private lessons a participant
must join the club before taking additional private lessons or
participating in an Adult Novice class.
The coaches will work with participants to determine the best next steps level given the progress made.
3. The Adult Novice program is for those beginners or club members who are ready to start rowing with others of comparable ability. Each program will cost $300 for 10 sessions. There is a maximum of 4 rowers per program. The dates for the Adult Novice programs are:
Adult Novice 1 - 7/9 through 7/30 Mon, Wed and Fri 5:30-6:45PM
If you want to participate in an Adult Novice session but cannot make the scheduled dates and times, contact our coaches or David Dowd, VP Rowing Programs programs@nereidbc.org. We will try to organize a session with others who also may be interested.
5. Private Lessons:
A. Club members may take private lessons at rate of $40 per hour for singles. Additionally, coaches can work with Competitive Masters to prepare training programs. All payments are to be made to Nereid but times are to be arranged with your coach.
B. Non-members may take lessons at the rate of $50 per hour. Non-members may take no more than 10 private lessons. All payments are to be made to Nereid but times are to be arranged with your coach.

Junior & College Competitive Programs
1. Junior Spring Competitive Program
A. Coaching
Sarah Kornblum and Chris Buesser will coach the Junior Spring Program, working with Nereid’s head coach, Boris Roque Alvarez.
B. Program Description
The Junior Spring program is intended for those whose High Schools do not have Rowing teams. Nereid will try to accommodate as many rowers as possible but cannot guarantee participation for all. Preference will be given first to those in High School and then to those in 8th Grade.
The rowers will be split into groups, with each group participating in 1 and 1/2 to 2 hour sessions depending on their skill and experience.
Group 1 - Competitive 6 times per week. Participation in this program, as well as regattas, will be at the coaches’ discretion. In order to participate in this program, athletes will need to successfully complete a 2k erg test and pass a technical evaluation.
Group 2 - Intermediate 4 times per week. Intended for those with rowing experience or those who have completed a Learn to row program
Group 3 - Beginner 4 times per week. Intended for those who have never been in a boat.
Participants
with no rowing experience are welcome to attend, but need to understand that there will be no refund if the participant decides to drop out of the program. Nereid offers other Learn to Row programs that may be more appropriate for a participant who is not committed to complete the program.
The coaches will make all decisions in which group the participants belong. Depending on a rower’s development, the coaches may change an athlete’s group during the season. The focus of the program is to develop technical skills, fitness and prepare athletes for races, if they are capable.
