The one-mile race for kayaks and canoes will start at about 1:45 p.m., and be followed by a river clean-up.  Nereid members are welcome to join in the paddle, help with running the race, or participate in the clean-up.  For more info, contact Mary Ann Copp at coppm2001@hotmail.com.

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

To all Nereids,

Our boat club has made a great start, in this, its 141st year of incorporation.  We have three new directors serving three-year terms on the board:  Joe DiCristo, who has taken on the challenging task of managing the club’s finances, working with Patty Kemps, our bookkeeper, and our accounting firm, Mercadien.  Sean Cefalo is Captain of the club, contributing his extensive rowing experience to the job, which combines keeping the fleet in good shape with maintaining a safe rowing environment on the river.  And Erin Martin is Club Secretary, doing public relations including the newsletter.  Welcome to the board!

2009 promises many changes.  Bob Hoguet, John Van der Tuin, and Peter Willcox have made great progress on the soft bank and waterfront park project.  Construction will start in the fall on the new bulkhead and park at the boathouse.  It will look much different next year with a new dock, deck, and additional boat storage on the north side of the boathouse.  It has taken many years to come this far and it’s very exciting that we are at the point where construction can begin!

The club made investments in the fleet this and last year under the leadership of Claire Van der Tuin and George Freimarck.  Most recently, we added a lightweight Empacher 2x and repaired other shells.  We are selling shells that are either underused or expensive to repair, generating funds for purchasing other needed boats.  The expanded fleet will continue to support our Learn to Row, Youth, and Masters programs, led by Dave and Natalie Dowd.  We will look to grow our membership by offering attractive programs and facilities to prospective and current members at an affordable cost.  Phil Gartenberg, our Membership Chair, is always looking for new ways to bring more rowers into the club.

Nereid relies on its members to keep up our friendly, supportive, and open rowing environment.  For the past few years the club rules have included a volunteering requirement that we haven’t enforced but which is a central part of membership.  Without members feeling responsible for the club and the boathouse and fleet, Nereid can’t function.  We are also responsible for our environment as a community member in Rutherford, on the Passaic, and as a US Rowing member.  There will be many volunteer opportunities throughout the year and I urge you to participate.  Working with each other to improve the club and the community is a part of what Nereid is – and it’s a great deal of fun.

We have a terrific team in place on the Board of Directors.  Let us know if there’s anything you think we should address.  We look forward to a great year at Nereid.  See you all on the water!

Marc de Mul

President

SPEAKING OF VOLUNTEERING…

Last year's successful National Learn to Row Day drew dozens of people interested in rowing – so many, in fact, that we didn’t have enough Nereid volunteers on hand to help them.  The success of this day depends directly on club members – please set some time aside to help out on Saturday, June 6th, from 9 am to 12 pm.  Contact Phil at Nereidjoin@hotmail.com to let him know when you are available to help out.

TIPPING DRILL PLANNED

Nereid is planning a tipping drill this spring at the Rutherford Y to help rowers learn to manage flips and re-entry into a boat.  This drill is highly recommended to new rowers, and to experienced rowers as a refresher.  To help us with planning, please indicate your interest by emailing Phil at Nereidjoin@hotmail.com
