ROWING
RESTRICTION MAY 16
Because of the annual
Passaic River Paddle this Saturday morning, Nereid rowers are requested to row
NORTH between 9 a.m. and 12 pm.
Kayakers will begin docking at Nereid at approximately 10 a.m.; canoers will follow at about 11 a.m. Nereid is fielding two teams – please cheer
them on!
NEREID MEMBER LANDS WORLD RECORD IN ERG MARATHON
Nereid
member Jim Beattie is now the World Record holder for the erg marathon (42,195m) according to Concept2
erg rankings for the new season. He finished with a time of 2:45:44.7 and an average split of 1:57.8. Congrats to Jim, and to Paul Gribelyuk and Adrian Nino De Rivera, who also achieved
personal bests! Here’s an excerpt of
Jim’s account of the challenging workout:
“On the sunny spring Sunday of May
10th, Paul Gribelyuk, Adrian Nino De
Rivera and Jim Beattie each completed an erg marathon. They each rowed the
42,195 meters in one sitting without any breaks. The boathouse was filled with
the whir of their three ergometers for nearly three
hours. On the television was Patrick Swayze’s 1989 hit movie Road House
and on the stereo’s speakers were motivational tunes, ranging from Madonna’s
“Like a Virgin” to Rammstein’s “Du Hast”. Paul
finished at a split of 2:01.1 (2:50:23.4), Adrian, who was completing his first
(and only?) marathon brutalized the poor erg for 2:47:47.7, a split of 1:59.3.
Completing his second marathon in six months, Jim surged ahead at the
beginning, only to slowly die a very painful death with 7,000m left to row. He
sputtered across the finish line after 2:45:44.7, a split of 1:57.8. This was
just better than Nereid member Eric Hagberg’s most
recent mark of 1:58.0 (Eric holds the world record for lightweight men in the
100,000 meter distance). To what do the
three attribute their success?”

NEREID JUNIORS
On May 2, Nereid juniors took
two first place finishes in races on the Passaic against other novices from Teaneck,
Montclair, Ridgewood and Don Bosco. The very
first competition for the many of the Nereids, several
of them had never even held an oar before March 16.
The two winning doubles were
composed of Amy and Michelle Russomano of Glen Ridge,
and Bradly Ryhins of NYC
and Tyler O'Connor of Wallington. Two other boys and girls doubles
competed, as well as a girls quad. The girls double took third place
out of three, while the boys were second out of two.
The girls quad started their race
very promisingly, showing excellent swing and leading in the first 30 strokes,
only to suffer two full stop crabs in succession. Nevertheless, they battled
back to close to a respectable two-length gap from the 2nd place finisher
over the 1200m course.
Head coach Oksana
Tsimbalova was effusive in her praise:
"These kids really want to race, and as their technique gets better so
will their speed. I really enjoy working with this group."
The 23 rowers in the Nereid junior
program come from Rutherford, Wallington, New York, Verona, Glen Ridge and
Cedar Grove. Their final race is a 1,000m race in front of the boathouse
on Saturday, May 23. Come on down and
cheer on your Juniors!
MAKE HYGIENE A PRIORITY
A recent article about a
skin bacterial infection among the Middlebury College men’s crew reminds us to
be diligent in cleaning our equipment.
Oar handles, seats and tracks should be washed with soap or wiped down
with disinfectant after every row.
Bucket water should be changed frequently, and rowers should wash
practice gear after every row.
