Strong races deliver Nereid a close second place at NYAC

STRONG RACES LAND NEREID IN TOP THREE AT NYAC INVITATIONAL

Nereid took third place behind NYAC and Saugatuck Rowing in the 9^th Annual NYAC Invitational held June 7 at NYAC’s race course on Travers Island, in Pelham Manor, NY.  Many of Nereid’s 14 races had close finishes, with four or five boats within a length of each other at the line. Highlights include:

• The Eric & Erik 2x (Hagberg and King) took first place and survived a NYAC protest over a lane violation, which other Nereids found irrelevant given the long, open water finish.
• George Freimarck and Gratia Pelliciotti held off a strong NYAC crew in mixed 2x to take first place with more than a length.
• Marc Monplaisir cruised easily to a 1x victory.
• Racers Bob Hoguet and John Van der Tuin led or held even for three-quarters of their race before lack of water time caught up with them.
• Carol Davidson competed with Briant Canha in the mixed 2x in her first ever race. Go Carol!

Other Nereid competitors included: David Dowd, Ian Hawkins, Leigh Hermey, Charley Johnston, Connie Kaldewei, Boris Roqueal Alvarez, Sheila O’Shea, David Wolf.

Bravo to all Nereids! Next year can’t come too soon!

NATIONAL LEARN TO ROW DAY DRAWS SMALL CROWD

More than 40 prospective and current rowers turned out for National Learn to Row Day on Saturday, June 6th. Visitors toured the club, took a lesson on the erg, and took a short row with coaches and experienced members. Two experienced rowers became members, and several other participants expressed interest in learn to row programs.

More than 20 Nereid members pitched in to make the day a success.  Special thanks to Erin Martin for pre-event publicity, David Dowd for logistics, and Nereid's coaching staff for lending their expertise.

PLEASE LEAVE GATE UNLOCKED FRIDAY AM

Friday (June 12) morning rowers are asked to leave the boathouse unlocked so that PVSC employees can inspect a storm water drainage outfall for us. The inspection is scheduled for 11 a.m. Thank you!

NEW MEMBERS

EILEEN SAMY, a new arrival to the New York area, has collegiate and club rowing experience in Hong Kong. She joined on National Learn to Row Day.

MIKE VELEZ, following in his daughter’s footsteps, has become an avid rower. He recently completed a Learn to Row program with Boris.

ROB WELSH, a recent law school graduate, has an extensive rowing resume including Yale, Penn AC, NYAC and elsewhere.

MARIUSZ ZAORSKI, an alumnus of Kearney High School and Nereid, rows at Rutgers.
