National Learn to Row Day – next week

Next Saturday, June 9th is National Learn to Row Day. Please come to the club that morning for a row – we need a good showing to encourage new rowers and potential members. The program starts at 9 AM. Look for announcements in area newspapers.

Nereid members are free to bring guests on LTR Day. Please remember that every guest rower must sign a liability waiver. Waivers are in the file on the inside of the boat bay door and are also available in the office.

Saturday morning, June 2: 5 Strong Volunteers Needed for 1 hour at 350

We have placed a new layer of crushed stone in the rear of the boathouse, and this area has been returned to it's pre-flood condition; clean and mud-free.

This weekend, starting Saturday afternoon, we have 50 people coming to Nereid for the first time to participate in Adult LTR classes, Junior LTR classes and Rutherford Youth programs. The rest of the walkways around the house need to be clean, mud-free and in tip-top condition. Next weekend is National Learn to Row Day and we are sponsoring a USRA Coaching Clinic which will have 20 local coaches attending, so the grounds need to look spiffy.

Another pile of crushed stone will be delivered to the side of the house on Thursday or Friday of this week. There are 2 wheelbarrows along the side of the house. There are shovels and a metal rake in the boat bay.

We need 5 able-bodied men or women to spread this stone all along the parking lot side of the house, and also fill in the dirty areas throughout the parking lot. When it rains, all these areas have been extremely muddy recently. Best way to do this is have 2 guys man the wheel barrows, two guys shoveling the stone into the wheel barrows, and 1 guy with the metal rake to spread the layer of stone. THIS SHOULD TAKE LESS THAN 1 HOUR.

This is a great way to work off your volunteering obligation!

Grateful Dads hike this Sunday

When I was living in Northern California I participated in a group called the Grateful Dads, in which dads and their kids got together once a month for a hike. This gave moms a break, and allowed dads to build some connections with each other and with their kids in a healthy outdoor setting. I though it was a great idea and I enjoy hiking with my daughters anyway in the warm months, so I thought I'd start a Grateful Dads group here.

I'd like to invite any interested dads to join me (Marc) and my daughters Chloe, 5, and Isabella, 2, this Sunday for our first hike. It's pretty informal, and being new to the area I'm not real familiar with the trails yet, but I hope this is a good choice:

Hike #1: Garrett Mountain Reserve in West Paterson. This site contains info and directions. There is a loop trail of about 2 miles in length that offers some interesting places to see and some great views of the New York skyline.

Meeting time: 9:30 AM, main parking area
Hike time: about 2 hours, done in time to get them home for lunch
What to bring: Hats, water, sunscreen, bug spray, snacks, Purell, and a band aid in case anybody stumbles. I'd recommend bringing a backpack or bjorn for kids 2 and under in case they get tired.

The forecast is for scattered thunderstorms over the weekend - obviously if it's storming Sunday AM we'll take a rain check for safety, but let's hope for the best !

I realize this is pretty short notice, but if we miss you this time feel free to join us in future months!

Buildings & Grounds committee seeks lawnmowers

We are working on setting up a lawnmowing schedule for the club with a designated lawn mowing volunteer for each week throughout the summer and fall. If this works, it could save the club significant expenses for lawnmowing. Volunteers would sign up for weeks when they are available to mow the lawn in front of the boathouse and along the street. The number of mowing sessions for each volunteer will depend on how many sign up.

If you enjoy gardening and would be able to volunteer to mow our lawn once or twice, please contact Lieutenant Claire van der Tuin. Thanks for your help!

Saturday morning open row

On Saturday mornings at 9 AM, Nereid hosts an open row at the club. We will put crews together with anyone who shows up. Afterwards, there'll be breakfast at the boathouse.
