BOARD ELECTS OFFICERS
Following the very successful March 19 Annual General Meeting, Nereid’s board of directors elected new leadership. Peter Willcox will now serve as president and Glenn Gero as vice-president. The board also welcomed a new director, Stacey Ornitz, and returning director David Dowd. Many, many thanks to the dozens of you who turned out for the AGM, as well as those who sent in proxy votes. We’re looking forward to a great season!
SAD NEWS
The Nereid News regretfully reports that longstanding club member Ray Longwell passed away April 2 after a two-year battle with ALS. Ray was a very kind, easy-going and dedicated rower who put countless hours into the Head of the Passaic Regatta, particularly on the difficult job of setting buoys on the course. Born in New Haven, Connecticut, Ray spent his high school years in Palo Alto, California and studied at Yale, where he learned to row. He graduated from City College of New York and worked more than 30 years as an architect in New York City and Philadelphia. With his wife Vana, Ray had two sons, Ian and Kevin. The Nereid board is working on plans to mark Ray's passing; details to come in the next Nereid News.
MEMBERSHIP FEES DUE APRIL 18
With the new season comes the reminder that membership and boat storage fees are due April 18. Please make your payment promptly so as to ensure a full year of rowing privileges! For those paying on the installment plan, the first credit card payment must be processed by April 18. If you did not receive an invoice, or otherwise have a question or concern, please contact Nereid’s membership chair Andrea Hurwitz at flexxmom@aol.com. And please be sure to sign a 2011 waiver, available in the rack upstairs in the sitting area. Signed waivers can be put under the office door.
NEREID JACKETS
Keep up with the latest Passaic River fashion: get a Nereid jacket! Joe Oliver is volunteering to coordinate an order from Boathouse Sports. The jackets cost $202 including shipping and will be delivered within 2-4 weeks of the order. Click here to check them out. (Of course, ours will be green and white.) Joe plans to order by April 18. Contact him at joepta05@aol.com as soon as possible to confirm your interest and size, and then mail or drop off your check at the club, made out to Nereid Boat Club.
FLEET UPDATE
Nereid Captain Sheila O’Shea reports that two club doubles are “in beautiful shape” after extensive refurbishment including new paint, sealing and other repairs.
We ask all members for TLC in dealing with our delicate fleet! Please remember that boats should be stored on their ribs whenever possible, and they should not be tied too tightly – that causes cracks in the gunnels.
Two more boats will be sent for refurbishment in the weeks ahead as part of the club’s ongoing effort to upgrade equipment. The Board has committed to refurbishing a total of six boats this year at a total cost of $12,000. The work is being done by Anthony Neczypor of Shell Repair in Camden, Anthony, who did masterly work in repairing the Diva last year, has particular expertise repairing Empachers.
Given the high cost of refurbishment, we are asking members to make a donation to the "Nereid Boat Refurbishment Fund." The membership invoice includes a tick box asking for a donation (i.e., $25, $50, $200, other), or checks can be made out to Nereid Boat Club and mailed to the club at PO Box 1678, Rutherford, NJ, 07070. The Club will be very grateful for all donations!
WEEKEND REGATTAS
The Passaic River will host a handful of junior regattas this weekend and next. The 2011 Passaic River New Jersey Championship will take place Saturday, April 9th, down river from Nereid. (southerly rowing not recommended Saturday morning.) On Sunday April 10th, Nereid juniors will face off against their peers from River Rowing in a series of races held after noon. More afternoon races will take place Sunday, April 17. Masters rowers should be advised that juniors will be using a few club boats for these races.
PARADE MARCHERS SOUGHT
Nereid is in the process of organizing a contingent to march in Rutherford’s Memorial Day parade. If you are interested in toting a boat and showing off the club’s green, please contact Joe DiCristo at dicristo@aol.com.
