NEREID JUNIOR SEASON ENDS
Capping a very strong season, Nereid juniors landed five of 13 boats in the finals of the July 17th Philadelphia Youth Regatta. A Nereid girls 4+ took first place in its final, while the others placed 4th and 6th. Aaron Dowd, who won his 1x heat, took 4th in a very competitive final.

The success of the day was marred by a crash of a Nereid girls 4x into the Strawberry Mansion Bridge. Fortunately, none of our rowers was injured, though the Diva was badly damaged. Nereid coaches filed a protest with the regatta's management, citing the failure of race officials, following in a launch, to prevent the crash.

On behalf of the entire club, a hearty congratulations to all Nereid juniors and coaches for a fantastic summer season. Your hard work and fine sportmanship was an inspiration to all of us!

NEREID MEMBERSHIP SOCIAL AUGUST 14
Please come along to an informal drinks party at the boathouse on Saturday, August 14th from 5pm. We'll sip the classic English boating cocktail Pimm's, as well as beer, wine and EANABS (equally attractive non-alcoholic beverages). The event will be a great opportunity for newbies and long-standing members alike to catch up on boat club news while celebrating dusk on the picturesque Passaic. BOATS FOR RENT
In case you are considering racing at US Masters Nationals (August 12-15) but can't trailer a boat, Vespoli has shells for rent. Available boats include 2-, 2x, 4+ and 8+, and rates range from $85-$300. Contact David Trond at dtrond@vespoli.com for more info.

TOWEL VACATION
One of the club's unsung heroes, Bob Farkas, who fulfills his volunteer requirement by washing our towels, will be on vacation from July 29 to August 15. Towels will be laundered again the week of August 21st. Bob is heading to Hungary, where he hopes to row.

BELLS AND BABES
All the best to Nereid members Philippe Watrelot on his recent marriage in Paris, and to Leigh Hermey, who gave birth to a baby girl on July 14. Sophia Angelina Hermey, who weighed 6 pounds, 14 ounces, was welcomed by her father Tom and three big sisters!

BITS AND BOBS
Boat auction and party: The Shackamaxon Boat Auction will take place Saturday August 28 at 6 pm at Boatworks at Shackamaxon, 3624 Balfour Street, Philadelphia. The event, which includes an open bar, music and light feed, is an opportunity to hawk your used boat, oars, or whatever rowing equipment. Or, if you're in the market, you may find something at a good price. There will be a smaller silent auction, proceeds of which will support local athletes racing for the US National team abroad this year. Contact Erin at nereidsec@hotmail.com for the full invitation.

New resource for coxswains: The Foundation for Rowing Education is promoting a new book: The Coxswain Encyclopedia, From Racks to Racing. Written by elite level coxswain and coaches, this 200-page book covers everything a coxswain needs to know. The book costs $35 and can be purchased at www.rowingeducation.org

2012 Countdown: 2008 Rowing Olympiad Giuseppe Lanzone was among several US athletes attending a July 26th celebration of the two-year countdown to the 2012 Games in London. The event, hosted by the British Consulate-General in New York, took place aboard the HMS Albion, a ship of the Royal Navy of the United Kingdom, which docked at Manhattan's Pier 86 for the evening.
