NEREID IN TOP 10% OF GLOBAL ERG CHALLENGE
With nearly 4.2 million kilometers rowed, Nereid took 27th out of 291 competing teams in the Concept2 January challenge. Twenty-four Nereid rowers, including both seasoned competitors and novices, participated. Eric Hagberg was the top male finisher with 562,960 kms; Andrea Hurwitz was the top female finisher with 220,562. Five other rowers broke 200k: Adrian Nino de Rivera, Jim Beattie, Fred Markovic, Glenn Gero and Frank Schaefer. Click here to see complete totals for the 24 Nereids who competed! Way to go guys!
ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING MARCH 19
Please make a note in your calendar – Nereid’s Annual General Meeting takes place Saturday, March 19 at 10 a.m. All members are warmly invited and strongly encouraged to attend – we need your participation to move forward on club business including the election of new directors for Nereid’s board.
SUPERBOWL ERG PARTY
Erg fun continues this Sunday, February 6th with a Nereid SuperBowl Erg fest at the boat house. Particulars of the workout are yet to be decided but suggestions have been made for relays, marathons and power 10s for every Steeler or Packer touchdown. Rendezvous at the club at 5 pm with a potluck dish, something to drink and your workout togs!
INTRODUCING NEW CAPTAIN AND BOARD MEMBER
Longstanding Nereid member and master rower Sheila O’Shea was nominated as Nereid captain at the board’s recent meeting, replacing Sean Cefalo, who resigned from the board. In the last two weeks, Sheila has already been busy on an inventory of the fleet, the refurbishment of two 2xs and reorganization of the boathouse. The board nominated Glenn Gero to fill the board vacancy. Congrats Sheila and welcome Glenn!

FEB. 13 TRIP TO WEST POINT TANKS
Nereid member Stacey Ornitz, with support from Coach Boris Roque Alvarez, is organizing a trip to West Point to work out in the indoor rowing tanks. The tanks are booked on Sunday, February 13th from 1-5 pm. There is space for 50 rowers! The total cost of $125 will be divided by all who participate. As Stacey says, this is unique and ridiculously inexpensive way to train! The trip from Nereid is approximately one hour; carpools are being arranged from the boathouse. Rowers of all levels are invited. Email Stacey at sdornitz@gmail.com to indicate your interest.
CONSTRUCTION FORCES SCHOOLS TO MOVE
Construction on the Route 3 Bridge and the continual presence of heavy equipment in the immediate area is forcing the high school rowing programs to leave their base at 550 Riverside Avenue. As a result of these safety concerns, the schools will relocate to 350 Riverside Avenue. The move, which is to take place about in late February, will involve relocating the boat racks, sheds, and docks from 550 to 350. Space for parking will be reduced to about 17 cars at the north end of the boat house site. The schools are expected to remain for the duration of the bridge construction project, approximately three years. Thanks in advance to all for their understanding and patience as we adjust to this situation. We will keep you informed as the move unfolds.
LEVEL I and II COACHING CLINICS
Level I and II Coaching Clinics
USRowing has two coaching clinics scheduled in February in New Jersey:
Level I - February 19th, Burlington, NJ. Open to all coaches, parents, teachers and rowers of any skill level or experience.
Level II - February 20th, Heightstown, NJ.
Open to those who have taken Level I or who have coached for at least a year and are comfortable with the basics of technique, training plans, physiology and rigging. Safety is a critical part of the level I program, so a coach must be well versed in the safety aspects of where they coach.
