VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR 10th Annual HOPR
Nereid needs you! Please volunteer to help out at the 10th Annual Head of the Passaic Regatta on Sunday, October 17. The 3-mile race, co-organized again this year by Nereid and the Passaic River Rowing Association, cannot work without volunteers. All sorts of fun jobs are available both on and off the water. Please visit www.hopr.org to sign up.

In related HOPR news:
- Registration for the regatta closes October 9. Don’t miss this chance to race on our home course. Check the website for detailed information.
- There are still a few days to get your ad in the regatta program. One-liners, a great way to show club spirit or support a loved one, are just $20. Sponsorship ads range from $100-$300. Contact apgartenberg@optonline.com ASAP to be included. The program is an important fund-raising vehicle for the regatta.

NEREID COMPETITORS CONTINUE TO RAMPAGE
Here’s the latest racing results: Nereid member Eric Hagberg had another fine day September 25th at the Hutchinson Cup Regatta on the Schuykill River in Philadelphia, taking 1st in the mens LW masters 1x and 2nd in the mens masters 1x turning stake race. The latter race involved a 500m sprint to a pair of buoys, a hairpin clockwise turn, and another 500m back!

Rowing a scenic but grueling 10km course, several members did Nereid proud at the GMS Regatta held September 19th on Lake Lillinonah in New Milford, Connecticut. Briant Canha and Marc Monplaisir took 4th in the men’s masters 2x while John Vandertuin and David Wolf took 10th in the same event. Nereid member Frank Schaefer, rowing for his home club in Germany, took 26th in a crowded field. In the mens LW 1x, Eric Hagberg placed 9th, just 22 seconds ahead of Charlie Johnston, who came in 11th.

The river won the 2nd Annual 25k Hudson River Challenge as wind and waves forced two-thirds of the competitors to abandon the race midway. Seven boats finished before organizers called the race and directed competitors to the Alpine Boat Basin, several kms short of the finish. Despite sunny skies, many boats were swamped by rough waters. Among those not able to finish was Nereid’s Eric Hagberg, who attempted the bridge-to-bridge course in a 1x. Read more here…

TIPPING DRILL
Nereid is offering members a 2-hour class to practice tipping and re-entering a single scull. The session will be held October 24th from 10am -12pm at the Rutherford High School/YMCA pool. A fee of $40 covers pool rental, coaching and equipment. The class is highly recommended for new members and others looking to boost their sculling confidence as the cooler weather makes a dip in the Passaic an unappealing prospect.

ROW FOR THE CURE
Fairfield County, CT rowers are organizing a special Row for the Cure regatta on November 6 at Veterans Memorial Park in Norwalk, Connecticut. The 500-meter sprint race has a range of categories for masters, novice and survivors. An entry of $35 gains access to an unlimited number of races, with proceeds being donated to the Susan G. Komen Foundation. Register online at Regatta Central.
