ROWERS NEEDED TO RECAPTURE TITLE
With the 10th annual New York Athletic Club Masters Scullers Invitational just around the corner, Nereid member George Freimarck is rallying competitive rowers to the docks.
While Nereid claimed the trophy in the early years, the club has not fared well recently against competitors from NYAC, Saugatuck and Pelham Community Rowing. George is determined that Nereid do better this year: “Please get your sorry (selves) back into shape, and take back that dang trophy!"
The event takes place Sunday, June 13 from 8:30 a.m. to noon at NYAC in Orchard Beach, New York (about an hour from Nereid). Singles and doubles are invited to race the 1000-meter course. The races will be followed by a light lunch at NYAC’s yacht club. Please help Nereid win the trophy. Email George for more info: GFreimarck@eqecat.com
JUNIORS RACING
The Nereid junior team will be rowing at the Cooper Cup this weekend. They will be using a club 4x, three club 2xs and 2 1xs. They will also row Saturday May 8 at Mercer Lake, using a few club boats. Plenty of fleet boats remain available for members’ use.
RUTHERFORD LTR DAY
On Saturday, May 8, the club is hosting a Learn to Row Day specifically for Rutherford residents. Please invite all your Rutherford friends, and feel free to come by between 10 am and 2 pm to lend a hand.
National Learn to Row Day will be help Saturday, June 5.
REGATTA COMMITTEE SEEKS NEW MEMBERS
The Head of the Passaic Regatta will be held this year on Sunday, October 17. This will mark the 10th anniversary of the regatta!! We will co-organize the regatta with the Passaic River Rowing Association as we've done in the past few years. In 2009, the HOPR had a record number of 137 entries and almost 400 participants. We hope to exceed those numbers this year.
We need a few dedicated Nereid volunteers for the regatta committee. Committee members should be able to attend monthly meetings at the boathouse and ideally have experience organizing or participating in rowing regattas. Some of the tasks that we need people for are race course design and setup, merchandise design and management, volunteer coordination, recruiting sponsors, and public relations.
The most rewarding thing about being a HOPR committee member is seeing hundreds of high school and Masters rowers compete on the Passaic and have a great time, something that would not happen without the committee! Please email Marc de Mul (regatta@hopr.org) if you are interested.
BOB O'CONNELL WALKS FOR CF
Two years ago, our son Emmett was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis (CF). The day (December 5, 2007) and our reaction (complete devastation) are forever etched in our memories. However, what seemed like drawing the short straw back then has proven just the opposite. We couldn’t ask for a happier, sweeter, brighter little boy. Emmett is a wonder – with his contagious smile and outgoing personality, he lights up our house, our lives, and our world.
Luckily for us, advances in medical treatments have continued to extend the median age of life for people with CF. But, there’s still no cure. Clearly, this doesn’t work for us. So once again, we will lace up our sneakers, lead Team Emmett and walk with the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation in their annual Great Strides event in Lyndhurst, NJ on Sunday, April 25 at 11:30 a.m.
Please help Team Emmett by either walking with us or donating. (Click here for details) The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation is an extremely lean and efficient organization that continues to be an integral part of bringing life-enhancing drugs and treatments for CF patients to market.
Thank you to all of our supporters - past and present. Please take a few minutes and watch a video of the little guy that you've so generously helped.
NEREID ORGANIZING TEAM FOR MAY 8th PADDLE RELAY

The race starts at Nereid and ends at Riverbank Park in Newark at 9 am. Paddlers should arrive at 7:30am for registration. Please contact John Van Der Tuin ASAP if you would like to participate at jvandertuin@balberpickard.com
