NEREID JUNIORS WIN GOLD
Capping a very successful season, Julia and Leila Pikus of Nereid's Junior Team won GOLD in the Senior Girls 2x race at the Stotesbury Regatta in Philadelphia May 15 with a time of 5:45:83. On behalf of the entire club, congratulations Julia and Leila!

Click here for a photo of the girls with Coach Oksana. Here are some interesting shots at the finish line.

The 2nd place finisher in that race, four seconds behind, was a 2x from Montclair High School, which, along with Teaneck High School, rows out of Nereid. Montclair placed 14 of 15 boats in semi-finals; eight moved on to the finals with medals in the following events: Freshman Boys 4x, first place; Girls JV 8+, second place; and Boys JV 4+, third place. Five Teaneck boats advanced to the semi-final, their best performance in recent years. Way to go!

The Nereid Junior team will compete this weekend on the Cooper River and at the Passaic Sprints.

PASSAIC SPRINTS SATURDAY
The Passaic Sprints will take place Saturday, May 22, at 9am. Rowers may wish to row north to avoid congestion.

MEMBERSHIP AND STORAGE FEES DUE
A reminder to all members that payments for membership, boat storage and lockers are due MAY 25th. To maintain membership privileges, please remit payment promptly. Current members will be posted on the bulletin board next to the log sheet and only those paid up will be allowed to row. Questions should be addressed to Elinor Sprouse at nereidjoin@hotmail.com.

NATIONAL LEARN TO ROW DAY JUNE 5
It's time to show off our great sport! Nereid will hold an open house on National Learn to Row Day, Saturday, June 5, from 9 am to noon. Please show your club pride by volunteering.

Volunteers are needed to support pancake production, give club tours, teach erg techniques and take visitors out for a short row. Please contact Dave Dowd at programs@nereidbc.org to indicate the times you are available. Of course, participation fulfills the member's annual volunteer obligation.

Also, we need your help recruiting attendees. Early next week, members will receive a specific NLTR Day email, which you can forward to friends, family, neighbors and co-workers. Let's beat last year's attendance record!

IMPROMPTU FUN RACE MAY 29
Members are invited to join the junior team for sprint races on Saturday, May 29 in front of the Nereid boat house. Racing will start around 9 am. Members are welcome to race as many times as they want. The course, just short of 1000m, starts north of the Route 3 Bridge and finishes just past the boathouse. Email Dave Dowd at programs@nereidbc.org for more info.

COACHED SESSIONS AVAILABLE
Are you looking for fun and a structured approach to rowing, learning and training with rowers of the same level? If so, then sign up for Nereid's 5-week coached sessions with Boris.

The introductory fee is $100 per team member, which includes three sessions per week for a total of 15 coached sessions. Yes, you read that right: just $100 for 15 coached sessions with Boris!

We are proud to announce the formation of the first team: women's novices, which have scheduled sessions for Mondays and Wednesdays at 6:30-7:30pm and Saturdays 5-6:00pm.

To join this group or take part in another, contact Diane Goodsell at dianegoodsell@aol.com

PASSAIC PADDLE BIG SUCCESS
More than 100 canoers and kayakers took to the river on May 8 for the 6th Annual Passaic River Paddle Relay, the largest turnout in the history of the event. The fabulous Nereid team (Doug Boydston, Marc de Mul, Charles Reilly, Stacey Ornitz, Claire Van der Tuin and John Van der Tuin) took 9th place.

Here's an eyewitness account, by Eric Killelea, a reporter for The Observer: If you are like I was before Saturday, before I drove to the Nereid Boat House in Rutherford to watch 125 people canoe and kayak the eight miles down to Riverbank Park in Newark; before I watched the 6th Annual Passaic River Paddle Relay; if you are like I was, before I watched paddlers accidentally go swimming in the river and not grow additional limbs, then you may not consider the Passaic safe enough to paddle on. You may not consider the Passaic River clean enough to fall into. However...

NEW LIBATION VESSELS AVAILABLE
A submission from David Wolf:
It has come to our attention that some Nereid members are without a libation vessel to call their own. After experimenting with a number of prototypes, and hours and hours of intensive trials, we have come up with a vessel that not only looks good, but is guaranteed to make beverages taste better and improve your oarsmanship at the same time. The price is $25, which includes an engraved Nereid logo and special inscription (name, nickname, etc.). Please make checks payable to David Wolf and post to 94 Windsor Road, Tenafly, NJ 07670. Click here for an artist's rendering of the vessel.
