OH WHAT A DAY!  HOPR A HUGE SUCCESS!

An octuple’s worth of congratulations to the competitors and organizers of the 9th Annual Head of the Passaic Regatta held Saturday, October 4th.  The joint effort by Nereid and PRAA resulted in a nearly perfect day of racing for nearly 400 rowers from 20 area clubs, colleges and high schools.

Some 57 Nereids raced in 12 events under stunning sunny skies on flat water, bringing home dozens of medals.  Nereid first place finishes came in the women’s youth 4x and 2x; the women’s masters 8+ and mixed 8+; the mother/daughter 2x, the men’s masters 1x and men’s recreational 1x.  Many other Nereid rowers placed very well, including a handful disguised by club affiliations such as the Sean Cefalo School and Mannheimer RG.  Results at www.hopr.org.

Many competitors joined other Nereid members in volunteering through the day, serving as photographers, announcers, hot dog grillers, dock masters, banana bread makers, officials and on-river safety people, to name a few.  A big shout-out to the several spouses/partners and children who generously donated their time and skills.  Thanks each and every one of you!

Hats off to the Nereid regatta committee and our partners at PRAA.  Many thanks also to our main sponsor, Boiling Springs Savings Bank, as well as the dedicated river-lovers at the Passaic Valley Sewerage Commissioners, Nutley Amateur Radio Society and the Passaic River Boat Club.

The hundreds of awesome photos tell the story of a great day.  Check out the HOPR photo album on the regatta website.

A FAREWELL TO NEREID

A note from Elizabeth Pomerantz:

I am sorry to report (to those of you who have not already heard) that this was my last weekend rowing at Nereid.  I didn't have a chance to say goodbye to many of you this weekend, so I wanted to send around a quick note saying thank you.  Before I joined the club last September, I didn't know it was possible for college graduates looking to race, but not at the National Team level, to row anything but singles. I have enjoyed being a member of the club and getting to know all of you and row with some of you. If I end up in the NYC area again in the future, I'm sure I'll rejoin the club and hopefully row with you again! Thanks to all Nereid members for creating an atmosphere of enthusiasm for rowing and friendly competition and for always welcoming new members no matter how long it's been since they last rowed!

BOOK ON THE PASSAIC

Writer Mary Bruno sent the following note to the club last week:

I recently finished my book, titled This American River.  It is in the process of being shopped to various publishing houses. Meantime, I've launched a blog, which I've been using to continue collecting stories and memories of the Passaic, as well as general news and info. I hope that you'll find the time to contribute. If you have a memory, tall tale, fish tale, photo, newsy update, question, gripe, whatever that you'd be willing to share, please visit the blog and enter it here:

Thank you all in advance for any contributions and for all your generous help during the last three (or has it been four?) years.

Readers can contact Mary at marybruno@mindspring.com
