NEARLY 800 TO ROW IN HOPR

Some 800 rowers from 33 clubs are set to race this Saturday, October 15, in the 11th Annual Head of the Passaic Regatta. The juniors’ competition will be stiff: the men’s youth 8+ and 4+ races and the women’s youth 4+ each have more than 20 entries!! Those races take place early – come early to see the battalion of boats on the river.

Co-sponsored by Nereid and the Passaic River Rowing Association, this year’s 2.5 mile race will start about a half-mile south of Nereid, just below the railroad bridge, and end some 1.5 miles south of PRRA. Good vantage points include South Riverside Park in Lyndhurst (PRRA boathouse) and the Route 7 bridge in Kearny. A few announcements from organizers:

Mandatory volunteer meeting at 6:30AM at PRRA for launch drivers, course monitors and start and finish timers. Please be there for important training!

Coaches/Coxswains Meeting at 7:30AM at PRRA, also open to bow scullers and singles rowers. Review the course, including the all important no-passing lanes at the bridges, and have a chance to ask questions of the Head US Rowing Official

Volunteers still needed!! If you can spare a few hours to help out, please contact Glenn Gero at njnaturaldoc@aol.com.

Buoys out: Organizers will set up the course Thursday. Rowers will be able to do practice runs on Friday.

TEAM HELEN BAKE SALE AT HOPR; HOC NEXT WEEK

Team Helen, aka Team Woz, will be offering baked goods in exchange for a donation at Saturday’s HOPR. Two dozen Nereid, PRRA and Ridgewood Crew women are raising money for beloved rower, cox and coach Helen Woznack, who was seriously injured in a July skydiving accident.

The women are competing next weekend in Boston’s Head of the Charles, boating as “Team Woz” in the Women’s Master’s 8+, Women’s Club 8+ and Women’s Master’s 1x. In addition, two boats from Ridgewood High School and one Nereid junior single will row as Team Woz.

Team Woz hopes to raise $17,000 to help Helen with medical costs that far exceed her insurance coverage. Please support this effort with a tax-deductible donation. You can contribute via paypal to teamwoz@gmail.com (please indicate that you are supporting the Head of the Charles effort) or send a check made out to “TEAM HELEN” to: Gratia Pelliciotti, 197 Ridgewood Avenue, Glen Ridge, NJ, 07028.

Thank you!

USROWING DINNER NOVEMBER 30
USRowing will hold its annual Golden Oars Awards Dinner on November 30 at the New York Athletic Club in Manhattan. USRowing will present seven awards recognizing members of the rowing community for their service and commitment to the sport including two new honors for leadership in diversity and inclusion and adaptive rowing. Funds raised at the dinner support the US National Team, America Rows and US Rowing Adaptive Programs. Tickets are $300 per person and $3,000 for a table of 10. The event promises to be an enjoyable evening of camaraderie for worthy rowing causes. John Van Der Tuin is trying to organize a table. If interested, contact him at: jvandertuin@balberpickard.com.

PASSAIC GROUP SEEKS MEMBER
The Passaic River Community Advisory Group (CAG) has asked the Nereid board to provide a representative to its group. CAG provides advice and recommendations to the US Environmental Protection Agency and other state and federal agencies to help ensure a more effective and timely cleanup and restoration of the Passaic River. Anyone interested in being considered for this position should contact Nereid board chair Peter Willcox at peterwillcox@gmail.com. The commitment includes four-six hours per month, including attendance at monthly meetings and service on a subcommittee.

ROWING IN THE DARK
Please remember: those rowing in the dark around sunrise and sunset must have proper bow and stern lighting on their boats, as prescribed by USRA. Also, all rowers should exercise extreme caution going through the Route 3 bridge, which seems to have lost its navigation lights in the course of construction. Anyone who chooses to row through that bridge does so at his or her own risk. Peter Willcox is contacting the State Department of Transportation to alert them to the absence of the lights and request that they be re-installed.
