SITE WORK BEGINS MONDAY
Preliminary work on the soft bank project will start Monday, April 12, with steps to address underground storage tanks to the south of the boat house. The excavation process is expected to take a few days. All boats should be kept off the outdoor racks until the work is complete.
ROWING WAIVERS REQUIRED
With a new rowing season comes the annual ritual of waiver-signing. Anyone who ergs or rows MUST sign a USRowing waiver. (Attached to this email.) Please sign and leave it under the office door at the boathouse or mail it into the club at PO Box 1678, Rutherford, 07070. Thanks!
AGM ELECTS NEW DIRECTORS
With 42 members in attendance and another 21 voting by proxy, Nereid's March 20 Annual General Meeting resulted in the election of three new directors to its board: Elinor Sprouse, Diane Goodsell and Phillipe Watrelot. Other AGM business included:
- Nereid's accountant at Mercadien reported that all financial statements and monthly reconciliations are up-to-date and that the club's federal 990 tax return will be filed on time. She also noted that 75 percent of every dollar Nereid brings in goes directly to programs.
- Membership report: Nereid's membership, at 118, is the highest it has been since 2002.
- Soft bank Project: Bob Hoguet, chair of the board's long range planning committee, provided a status report on the soft bank project, noting that preliminary work will begin in the next few weeks, and that work to rebuild the bank and make other improvements is expected to begin in late summer/early fall.
Following the AGM, the new board of directors met to elect officers and fill appointed positions. The new officers include:
- Bob Hoguet, President
- Peter Willcox, Vice President
- Philippe Watrelot, Treasurer
- Erin Martin, Secretary
Other standing appointments include:
- Sean Cefalo, Captain
- Joe DiCristo, Lieutenant
- David Dowd, Programs Chair
- Elinor Sprouse, Membership Chair
- Diane Goodsell, Deputy Chair, Membership and Programs
GOOSE SQUAD ON THE LOOSE
In an effort to minimize slippery, slimy droppings on the dock, several club members have applied their minds to geese deterrence. The latest solution, ingeniously crafted and installed by club member Dirk Miewes, creates a barrier with a yellow rope linked to a series of red reflectors. (Thanks Dirk, and others who've been working on this.)
If you wish to row, simply lift the reflectors from their anchors, remove both rope and reflectors, and stow them neatly just inside the south bay of the house. If you are the last to row, please replace the rope and reflectors. Please DO NOT launch with the ropes in place; you will risk damage to yourself and the equipment, and increase the likelihood of tipping.
COMMON SENSE ALERT
If you are the last one to the leave the club, no matter the time of day, please be sure to lock the gate!

REGATTA COMMITTEE SEEKS NEW MEMBERS
The Head of the Passaic Regatta will be held this year on Sunday, October 17. This will mark the 10th anniversary of the regatta!! We will co-organize the regatta with the Passaic River Rowing Association as we've done in the past few years. In 2009, the HOPR had a record number of 137 entries and almost 400 participants. We hope to exceed those numbers this year.
We need a few dedicated Nereid volunteers for the regatta committee. Committee members should be able to attend monthly meetings at the boathouse and ideally have experience organizing or participating in rowing regattas. Some of the tasks that we need people for are race course design and setup, merchandise design and management, volunteer coordination, recruiting sponsors, and public relations.
The most rewarding thing about being a HOPR committee member is seeing hundreds of high school and Masters rowers compete on the Passaic and have a great time, something that would not happen without the committee! Please email Marc de Mul (regatta@hopr.org) if you are interested.
PASSAIC HOSTS MAJOR HIGH SCHOOL REGATTA
Some 500 rowers from a dozen New Jersey schools competed April 10 in the Passaic River's first-ever USRowing-sactioned high school event. Sponsored by the Passaic Valley Sewerage Commissioners, the Passaic River Northern New Jersey Championship Regatta included 30 1000-meter sweep and sculling races in novice, freshman, lightweight, junior varsity and varsity divisions. Congrats to all the rowers and thanks to all the Nereid volunteers who helped make the day a great success. Click here for an article on the event in The Bergen Record and here for results.
PADDLE RELAY MAY 8th
The 6th Annual Passaic River Paddle Relay will take place Saturday, May 8, 2010.
The race will start at Nereid and end at Riverbank Park in Newark at 9 am. Paddlers should arrive at 7:30am for registration. The next Nereid News will include info on how to join Team Nereid. Meanwhile, contact Thomas Pietrykoski at TPietrykoski@pvsc.com with other questions.
