SOFT BANK UPDATE
All parties involved in the soft bank construction project came together last week for a pre-construction meeting to identify steps toward implementing the project. PVSC, the Passaic Valley Sewerage Commissioners, will begin demolition of the current bank any day now. Please note: the presence and/or operation of heavy equipment may prevent members from parking in the lot. In those situations, please utilize street parking.
THE FUTURE OF NEREID
With the soft bank project underway, the board of directors is looking toward Nereid’s future. To that end:
Capital campaign: the board agreed at its December meeting to initiate a capital campaign in 2012 to raise funds in case of a potential funding shortfall related to the soft bank project and/or to expand the club fleet. The first step in the process is the establishment of a campaign committee. Anyone interested in volunteering should speak to Peter Willcox or email nereidsec@hotmail.com. In the meantime, if you are looking to make year-end gifts, please remember Nereid with a tax-deductible donation.
Vision session: Should we add more high school programs? Turn the third floor into an erg/weight room? These are the sorts of ideas to be brainstormed and discussed at an open meeting on the vision and future direction of the club. The board will hold this meeting Saturday, February 4th at 11 a.m. All members are invited to participate. Please read the next Nereid News for detail on the agenda. If you are unable to attend but have an idea or comment, please email nereidsec@hotmail.com.
ROW AT WEST POINT TANKS
A few spots are still available for the club’s outing to the West Point rowing tanks on Sunday, January 8. Carpools will depart Nereid at 11:30 a.m. for a 1 p.m. rowing time. Tank rowing, with its relative slow water speed and controlled conditions, provides an excellent opportunity to hone technical sculling and sweep skills and add dimension to winter training. THANKS TO WINTERIZING VOLUNTEERS
Many, many thanks to all those who turned out to help winterize the house on December 9 and December 10!! Your efforts are much appreciated. The docks were removed December 12th and floated down to Nereid’s property at 550 Riverside Avenue for winter storage. Twelve weeks (+/-) and counting ‘til we’re back on the water!
NEW BOATS!
With nearly $9,000 in proceeds from this year’s Head of the Passaic Regatta, the Nereid board agreed at its December 12 meeting to dedicate proceeds to acquiring a new boat or two. A handful of volunteers are needed for a short-term committee to work with Captain Sheila O’Shea and Coach Boris Roque Alvarez in advising on how the funds should be spent. If interested, send an email to sheila.oshea@comcast.net. Please note that these purchases would not be possible without the hard work of volunteers who made this year’s HOPR such an incredible success! Thank you, thank you!
NEW YEARS RESOLUTIONS
Along with resolutions to lift more weights and shave seconds off our splits, perhaps we Nereids can also take a moment to reflect on how we can be better club mates in 2012!!
Here are a few suggestions for your lists:
- When you are last to leave the club, turn the lights off and be sure windows are closed.
- Keep the boat bays closed.
- Do not adjust the heat and definitely do not turn it off – our pipes will freeze!!
- Be neat in the locker room.
- Recycle!!! All cans/bottles/other plastics should go in the kitchen bin, not the trash!
- Read every word of the Nereid News.
SAVE THE DATE
Nereid’s annual club dinner will be held Saturday, January 28. Formal invite to follow.
ERGING FUN
With the docks gone, why not join the erg party indoors?!! Get the most out of your membership by taking a spin on the erg, lifting weights or stretching. Or maybe just come and watch a game in the media/erg room. Some masters’ rowers have been erging at 6:30 pm on weeknights and 9:30 am on weekends. The more the merrier! Join the winter party!
BYOT
Over the past few seasons, club members Bob Farkas and Erik King volunteered to launder towels and make them available for use in the locker rooms. As both are currently retired from that responsibility, club members are asked to bring their own towels and wash them at home. Thanks to Bob and Erik for this very kind service. If anyone would like to volunteer to take over the towels, please email nereidsec@hotmail.com.
SHORT STROKES
