4th Annual Passaic
River Paddle Relay this Saturday
Parking during the Paddle: Please
do not park in the Nereid lot on Saturday.
Rowing
restrictions during the Paddle:
- No rowing south after 9 AM
- Limited rowing between 10 AM and 12 PM, when paddlers will be docking
at Nereid
This year’s Paddle Relay will take place on Saturday, May
10th. The Paddle will follow the same 8-mile course as in
previous years with one exception – the course will be
reversed, with paddlers starting in Riverbank Park in Newark and
finishing at the Nereid Boat Club in Rutherford (paddling with the
tidal current). The course will still be divided into three
legs with teams consisting of six (6) paddlers, with two (2) paddlers
per canoe each leg. There will also be an individual kayak
portion of the race.
Paddlers, friends and family members are invited to the Nereid Boat
Club after the race for the finish line festivities, which will include
the Paddle awards ceremony, live animals from Essex County’s
Turtleback Zoo, food donated by Whole Foods Market, as well as an
exhibit from local children entered in Essex County’s Earth
Day Poster Contest, with the winning poster announced.
Look for a close race with our Nereid team (composed of John &
Claire Van Der Tuin, Bob O’Connell, Marc de Mul, Peter
Willcox, and Dave Dowd) looking to reprise its first place finish in
last year’s race. Competition includes a team from
the Passaic River Rowing Association.

Register for the
NYAC Scullers Invitational, June 1
Just a reminder about our Sunday, June 1st Annual Regatta among Nereid,
NYAC and Saugatuck.
We plan to start racing at 8:30 or 9:00 am. Tide conditions
will be perfect. All races will be singles and doubles: Men
and women singles by decades: 30 to 39, 40 to 49.....70 and
over. Doubles, men, women and mixed: by combined age: Up to
99 years and 100 and over years. One's age on 6/1
is the determining factor.
I will need from you: Names, ages, events, and numbers for
lunch. 2 races maximum for each sculler. No limit
on number of entrants per event, points awarded for places 1st, 2nd,
3rd. If we have to run second heats for some events/decades,
at least two clubs must be entered in Heat #2 to count. In
such cases of two heats, Heats #1 and #2 will be determined by further
defining age (for example in the 50's, 50 to 54 and 55 to 59).
Because food has gotten pretty expensive, we will ask our guest clubs
to contribute $10 per sculler and guest for the beer and deli buffet
luncheon at noon. I will look to the guest club captain to
give me one check made out to the NYAC Rowing Club, or cash, covering
your numbers. I hope the charge will not be a deterrent!
I think that does it but please send me any questions.
Regards and see you soon, Tom Sanford, NYAC.
Nereids:
please contact George Freimarck if you want to participate.

National Learn to
Row Day
This year’s LTR Day is on Saturday, June 7. Nereid
will take part in the event by holding erging demonstrations and taking
interested participants out for a row. We need volunteer members to
promote Nereid and the sport of rowing, and to help out with short gig
boat rows for people who come. Waffles and good rowing karma
will be your rewards!
Please feel free to invite your non-rowing friends – this is
their chance to find our what rowing is about!
Contact Erin Martin or Phil Gartenberg (nereidjoin@hotmail.com) for
more information.

Sun Protection
by Willie Black, USRowing
Six weeks before departing for the 2004 Olympic Games where he would
win a gold medal in the men’s eight, coxswain Pete Cipollone
was diagnosed with stage one melanoma on his forearm. Before departing
for the Games, he had two surgeries; the second one leaving him with
more than 60 stitches.
Pete, now a spokesperson for the National Center for Skin Cancer
Prevention, says, “Rowers spend hours each day in the sun,
often without shirts or hats. I want all athletes to understand that
skin cancer can hit you even when you are young and in great
shape.”
