NEREID HAS GREAT START AT NATIONALS
Rowing a composite boat, Nereid’s Marc Monplaisir and PRRA’s Jim Benz led start-to-finish in a fierce headwind to win gold in the men’s heavyweight 2x finals Friday at US Master’s Nationals in Camden, NJ, with a time of 3:52. Well done Marc! Congrats also to Nereid’s Eric Hagberg, who placed 2nd in his heat and 5th in the final of the men’s lightweight 1x on Thursday. Kudos to Andrea Hurwitz, rowing Thursday with PRRA member Clemens Reinke, for taking 2nd in their heat and 4th in the final of the mixed 2x. PRRA rowers Helen Woznack, coxswain of the Nereid master’s women’s 8+, and Denise Cenit won the lightweight women’s 2x on Friday.

Good luck to other Nereid members who will compete over the weekend, including: Rob Welsh, Briant Canha and Charlie Johnston. Bring home the hardware!

CLUB SOCIAL TONIGHT
Please stop by the boathouse after 5 pm this evening, August 14th, for an informal drinks party. We'll toast the season with the classic English boating cocktail Pimm's, as well as beer, wine and EANABS (equally attractive non-alcoholic beverages). The event will be a great opportunity for newbies and long- standing members alike to catch up on boat club news while celebrating dusk on the picturesque Passaic. Contributions of drinks and nibbles will be gratefully received. Contact membership chair Elinor Sprouse at nereidjoin@hotmail.com with any questions.

CROSSFIT COURSE SEPT 4-5
Olympic gold medalist Erin Cafaro will be among the coaches leading a CrossFit Rowing Certification course at Nereid on September 4 and 5. Several Nereid rowers have enjoyed the benefits of CrossFit training, which uses the Concept2 rower as one of its core exercises. The class will be indoors Saturday and on the water Sunday. This is a for-fee program, but slots are available for anyone who wants to tune up for the fall season with professional coaching! Email David Dowd at dowdda@comcast.net or Marc Montplaisir at marcm77@yahoo.com for more info or to sign up.

SHOES MISSING
Shoes for the men’s heavyweight Empacher 8+ are missing. They were last seen in the fall when the boat was derigged. If you know anything about the shoes, please email Frank Schaefer at Schaefer_67@hotmail.com.

USROWING CONSIDERING MANDATORY MEMBERSHIP
In a recent letter to the rowing community, USRowing CEO Glenn Merry floated the idea of making individual membership to USRowing mandatory for all competitive rowers. (Read Merry’s letter on Nereid’s blog.) Currently, people who want to row in USRowing-sanctioned regattas are eligible to participate so long as their club is a USRowing member. Merry’s proposal would eliminate that option. Please read the letter and let Nereid know what you think on the blog or in an email to nereidsec@hotmail.com. Nereid trustees will discuss the issue at the next board meeting Sept. 13.

As part of USRowing’s consultations on the issue, the South Jersey Rowing Club will host a town hall meeting on Thursday, August 19 from 7 to 9 pm at the Camden County Boat House, 7050 North Park Drive, Pennsauken, NJ. If you wish to attend, email Dennis Smith at dsmith3062@aol.com or dennis.smith@atlanticcityelectric.com.

FORMER NEREID IN STAR-LEDGER
Check out this story on former Nereid trustee and member Mike Lyons: With stagnant economy, military retention and recruitment are booming.

Michael Lyons thought he had a career plan: Continue working as an equity trader on Wall Street and finish 20 years of service with the Army National Guard. Then came layoffs. His well-paying civilian job was gone. So Lyons, 45, of Princeton, turned to full-time employment in the New Jersey National Guard, where he found job security and benefits. More…

USROWING SEEKS VOLUNTEERS
Get a chance to see the next round of US Olympiads by volunteering at the National Selection Regatta August 19-21 at Mercer Lake in Princeton, NJ. Volunteers are needed to serve as stakeboat holders, dock assistants, start/finish timers and launch drivers. To sign up, click here.
