Frequently Asked Questions

Rowing at Nereid

1) How far can you row in each direction, starting from the boathouse?

You can go about 4 miles in either direction.

2) Is there any commercial or recreational traffic on the river?

There is no commercial traffic on the river for several miles.  Recreational traffic is rare.  Crew traffic and coaching lauches are common sights due to seven high school programs and two clubs which call the Passaic their home.

3) Is Nereid and the Passaic a good place to row?

Yes!!  The Passaic waters are sheltered, generally flat and calm with stretches that are fairly straight.  The Passaic is a good rowing river .  Nereid is a fun and friendly place to row.

4) What time do people row during the week?

Many members row first thing in the morning before going to work.  During the Spring and Summer months members also row in the afternoons.

5) What time do people row on the weekends?

Most members come between 7am and 10am, but the boathouse is generally open all day on Saturdays and Sundays.

6) What is the usual rowing season?

March to November.  The boat house is open year round.

7) How clean is the Passaic water?

It is not clean, but it is improving.  As a club, we are involved with cleaning up the river and often work with the Passaic River Coalition.

Location

1) What is Nereid's address?

The address is 350 Riverside Avenue, Rutherford, NJ, 07070.

2) How far is it from NYC?

10-15 minutes by car after you exit the Lincoln Tunnel. Check out the directions to Nereid.

3) How can I get there if I live in NYC and don't have a car?

NJ Transit “The Way to Go” Bus 190.  Not a very good option during the week, but fine on the weekends.  The bus takes about ½ hour to get to Rutherford.  NJ transit trains also stop in Rutherford throughout the week.  Check with NJ transit for times and schedule.  Carpooling is a popular option, too.

Beginners

1)   Why is rowing good exercise?

It offers a full body, aerobic, anaerobic, low impact exercise.

2) Is rowing bad for my back?

Generally, no.  You can however hurt your back if you lift a boat improperly or if you row with poor technique.  Rowing actually strengthens your back when done properly.

3) Does the club give rowing lessons for beginners?

Yes!

4) Do I have to own my own boat?

No, club boats are available for all members.

New Members

1)  I've never rowed before. How can I try it?

The club has a great introductory program called, Learn To Row.  No experience necessary!

2) How can I become a member?

E-mail us, or call the boathouse at (201) 438-3995.

3) How much does it cost to be a member?

Check out membership info link for current rates.

4) How do I identify which boats and oars are club property?

The club boats have Nereid stickers.  The stickers say “A”, “B,” or “C” corresponding to the minimum skill level required to use the boat.  Beginners can use C boats.  Club oars are on the left side of the boathouse, looking from the house toward the river.

5) How do I rent the club for private events?

The upstairs facility at the boathouse is a popular place to hold events, from local non-profit meetings to bridal showers. Rentals are available throughout the year.
